Wednesday-Friday continue next week....
You will be creating your own I Survived book based off journal entries. Each day you will be given a topic to write about to add to your book. See below for more details.
I Survived the Coronavirus Pandemic
- A primary source is an eyewitness account of an event. A first-hand, original source! YOU are currently experiencing something that will go down in the history books!
- What is a pandemic? A pandemic is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease that has spread across a large region, typically across multiple continents or worldwide.
- Think of this as an “I Survived” book. You will be keeping a journal to document this historic event!
- This is your journal, so share what you feel! Be as detailed as you can (feelings, dialogue, things you notice). You are the author of your own story and you want the reader to feel as though they are a part of it! Don’t feel limited to just words- you can also draw, doodle, record yourself, or create a video to document a day in the life of YOU!
- Each day this week you will be given a prompt that you will add to your journal.
Writing your journal options:
- Write on notebook paper
- Type in Word Document
- PowerPoint (each chapter/prompt will be a new slide)
- Each prompt can be considered a new chapter.
- Feel free to add drawing or illustrations for your journal entries.
Wednesday
Chapter Prompts: Here are some questions to guide you while you write each chapter. You do not have to follow these questions exactly or answer all of them. Rather, it is a guide to get you thinking about the topic. Also, feel free to add/answer your own questions in each chapter.
Ch. 1: When I First Heard About the Coronavirus
- When did you first hear about the coronavirus?
- What was your reaction when you first heard about it?
- Did anything change in your daily routine after first hearing about it?
- What did your parents, teachers, friends say about the coronavirus.

Day 13 Digital Learning
Converting Measurements lesson: zoom.us/j/940900721?pwd=eHJNOEd5RlNDWEhFNlNDb080M2VkUT09
Next week is spring break and there will be NO digital learning.
I understand this “new norm of learning” is difficult for some and still trying to figure things out. But, please realize I still have to do my job and make sure that your child is learning, and as a result I still have to collect data, etc. on our students even if grading is not an option right now. If your child fails an activity in Freckle (reading or math) they will be reassigned the activity to do again. The good thing about Freckle is that I can see how long it takes them to complete an activity and what their scores are. From my end, even though I have reminded them continuously in zoom meetings, it seems many are still rushing through the activities in under 5 minutes and even in under 2 minutes, and their scores reflect it! For math, please make sure your child has a copy of any notes (in interactive notebooks) to use as a guide as they complete the assignments. For reading, they should be using their strategies and reading through it twice and finding the evidence to support their answers. Any child who gets a 70% or below on any Freckle assignment will be reassigned that specific activity for the next day to redo, along with what ever the new material for that day is. Please understand that I am not trying to add more work for the students, but they need to realize that just because we are not at school, they still have to do their best even if school is at home right now. I just want the best for your child and their education no matter what the circumstances are. Thanks for understanding and love and hugs to all😊

Day 4 Digital Learning
I hope everyone is surviving this “new norm”, but most importantly staying healthy. I know for many of you, you and your family are juggling your child’s or children’s digital learning on top of your own jobs, whether you’re at home or still commuting to and from work- Bless all of you! I want to reiterate again how important it is for your child to complete the allotted time that I have set up for your child’s digital learning (math and reading). Elementary school is supposed to be 2 hours daily! Just because your child is at home, it is still school work and very important no matter where the setting takes place. I do log onto Dreambox and Freckle every night to see who’s completed the allotted math time given and if both reading lessons have been completed. Again, I know this is all new and everyone still could be adjusting to schedules, etc. but please try to make sure your child is completing the guidelines.
On another note, I would like to try and use Zoom to communicate and chat, NOT Skype. I will post a link on the blog and send you a link through Remind101 with the instructions, time, and day for our first class zoom meeting. I am aiming for Friday, March 20 at 10:30am, so I hope your child can join😊 All you will need to do is click on the blue link in the email at 10:30am on Friday- that simple! I can’t wait to see everyone’s 😊 Hugs and love to everyone!

Day 2 Digital Learning
Students/Parents: I hope everyone’s first day of learning went smoothly and well! I want to reiterate how important it is to please follow and stick to the assignments that I’ve only assigned for that day. I want to also emphasize once again how important it is to complete the balanced learning assignments which is about 1 hour of math and 1 hour of reading/language arts. I made it clear with the students and in previous emails that I would get on Dreambox and Freckle daily (every night) to check to see if your child had completed the minimum time we required of each. I have checked and can see who has and hasn’t followed the guidelines. As far as Freckle, I expect that BOTH lessons to be completed- completing one and not the other. I can also see who has rushed through their reading, and as a result, their scores showed that they rushed through. Please make sure that your child takes their time on their work😊 I understand that learning under these circumstances is difficult for all of us, but we are trying our very best to make things as smooth as possible for your child at home. Please remember that official school hours or “office hours” for all employees is 9:00-10:30am Monday through Friday. Please try to be considerate of those hours for emails, questions, concerns, etc.
On a different note, if you saw the message from Margaret Adams, one of our office staff, she will upload any pics you take of your kids working at home that you have sent to me. Please send me pics of your kids in action at home. I’d love to send them to her to share! Take care and talk to everyone tomorrow😊

Dear Parents,
Thank you for your overwhelming response to chaperone our 5th grade field trip to Chattanooga. The number of chaperones allotted was determined by the tour company based on seating on the bus, number of tickets needed per attraction and the logistics of moving such a large group to multiple venues. Due to these factors, only those adults chosen will be allowed to attend. Three chaperones per class were randomly drawn through a lottery with each chaperone’s name entered according to the permission slip.
The following names were selected:
Lyman Myers Purdy Seivers Stone
Tavares Chambless Katie Gilligan Michael Washington Holly Quinlan Victor Blanton
Lynetta Johnson Laura Ripley Mark Green Deborah Lanier Madelyn Gahan
Ron Lair Catherine Gambrell Gillian Moore William Johnson Lenise Jordan
The cost of the field trip for chaperones is $117. The due date for payment is Friday, February 14th. If for some reason you are unable to attend, or you no longer wish to chaperone, please let your child’s teacher know and we will select another chaperone from the lottery.
Once again, thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support for our students and teachers!

Dear Parent or Guardian:
On January 28th and 29th a health-care professional from HealthWise Developmental Education Specialists, Inc. will present a program on human growth and development to the 5th grade students. This program meets the quality core curriculum requirements in health, which relate to the onset of puberty. This program is designed for their age and maturity and the boys and girls will be separated.
The presentation focuses on the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. The program will educate them on the role of the endocrine glands during puberty, male and female anatomy and the normal physical changes that occur in both genders, and good health habits. Each gender’s class emphasizes same-gender information, but also includes factual information about the opposite gender. Throughout the class and video presentation students are encouraged to talk to a “trusted adult” during adolescence to answer their questions. The students are encouraged to continue discussion at home. The class is designed to make your child aware of and comfortable with the changes that are occurring to his or her body.
This presentation has been well received by parents, teachers, and students. The instructor is well trained and experienced on this topic and sensitive to any issues. The program is approved and recommended by the Human Growth and Development Committee and Board of Education for the Cobb County School System.
Parental permission must be granted for student participation in programs dealing with puberty education. Students not participating will work on activities in another area. We ask that you sign and return the portion below by Wednesday, January 7th if you approve participation. No student will be permitted to attend unless written parent permission is received.
Some parents may want additional information to facilitate further discussion at home while others may wish to know more before making a decision for approval. Therefore, a parent preview has been planned on Thursday, January 16th @ 3:00 in Still’s Media Center.
Thank you for your continued interest and support in your child’s activities.

Dear parents,
As part of a math STEM activity, we are going to be creating Tacky Christmas sweaters. We are asking that each student bring in a t-shirt, sweater, or sweatshirt of some kind. The garment can be new or used as it will be covered in tacky supplies! Please look around your house for any craft materials that could be used for this project. All materials need to be at school by Friday December 13, so we can start making our ugly shirts on Monday!
Thank you so much for all your support!

GCI produced 2 magnets and 4 wallets for each student. These packages were in a sealed plastic bag that is labeled for each student. If you decide to keep them, please send in a $12 payment in the envelope that is provided in the package; if not, please return the magnets and wallets. There is a white box in the front office, so please have your students drop off either the envelope with the payment or the returned package. Thanks for your help with this!

NEWS FROM FRONT OFFICE
All students are supposed to have an ASP registration form on file. Even the ones who don’t normally stay in ASP. The reason? In the event of an emergency with the family (a doctor visit runs long, a flat tire, an accident of some sort, a long winded conference call), we have permission to keep the student on campus after school hours.

Hello all,
I just wanted to send a reminder that February 15th is the last day for parents to submit dedications for their child. I know reminders have been sent home over the last few weeks. As a parent, I thought February seemed so far away. Now it's here! (This is a reminder for myself, as well!)

Career Speakers Needed!
WHEN: Wednesday, January 23
WHAT: Career DAY!!!
The Still Counseling Department will host Career Day! We would like to invite parents or people in the community to come talk to our students about your career choice, what a typical day is like, why you chose your profession and what academic skills are needed for your career.
Speakers will only present for 1-11/2 hours to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Please email Dr. Missy Johnson at [email protected] or call 678-594-8287 ext. 263, if you are interested in speaking to our students about your exciting career. We are looking for all different types of careers. Research has shown that it is valuable to explore career opportunities with students at an early age. Career awareness can help improve students’ attitudes about school by helping to “connect the dots” between the relationship between school and career.

If you decide to keep them, please send in a $12 payment in the envelope that is provided in the package; if not, please return the magnets and wallets. Still Elementary Families,
We are halfway through our Fun Run program and we have raised over $15,000. Thank you for your support of this important campaign. We are well on our way to achieving several goals that will allow us to purchase student laptops and to provide additional needed resources for our STEM programs.
Just so you know, students have been given a WEEKEND CHALLENGE! If a student receives a total of $2 per lap in NEW pledges ($60 in flat donations) or more, over the weekend, they will receive a bonus prize…in addition to their normal prizes!
We have 38% of our students who have at least one pledge for the Fun Run program. THANK YOU! We have an opportunity to increase that number as we begin our final week of fundraising. We can’t do it without you!
Visit funrun.com to enter your pledges and be sure to watch the Mind Spark Mystery Lab videos with your child, too. Don’t forget to come out and cheer on our runners on November 2nd.
Also, make sure to “like” Still Elementary Foundation on FaceBook to receive campaign updates and to see some fun pictures and videos.
Thank you for your support. Have a great weekend!

Your Room Moms are Peco and Betsy.
We would like to take this time to introduce ourselves. My name is Peco Jennings and I am David’s Mom. Betsy Mormile is Brooklyn's mom and we are the room moms for Mrs. Purdy’s 5th grade class. Mrs. Purdy is absolutely wonderful already and our children are going to have an awesome 5th Grade year!
Before we talk fun stuff (Auction Basket) we must give you the important messages from the PTSA. It’s also helpful to sign up for their emails if you haven’t. Their emails are great reminders of upcoming events at the school.
First, please consider buying a PTSA membership, if you have not done so. Last year the money raised through memberships purchased 25 iPads and a charging cart. This year the goal is to be able to purchase twice that amount. Our goal is to have each grade level with their own cart of 25 iPads. We really want our students to have the best technology available! The grade level with the most amount of memberships gets a pizza party!
This year the movie night/auction is earlier and will be held on October 13. PTSA would like us to turn in the finished baskets by Sept 21. Below I’ve included a signup genius with items for our class basket. Please note, if you sign up for an item it is due no later than September 17 (we need these ASAP)

Walking Club
Purpose: The purpose of this walking club is to promote movement before school. One of the initiatives Cobb County has adopted is movement before, during, and after school. There are also benefits for the homeroom teachers – time!
How it works: The gym will be opened for walking from 7:15 to 7:40. Students must drop their book bags off, perform any tasks required from their teacher, and eat breakfast before coming to the gym. Each grade level will be assigned a day during the week.
Incentives: This is not a mandatory program. But to get the students here and walking, we have walking tokens. After students in a class reach a goal, they will receive a token. The goals are specific for grade level, calculated by class-not individually, and based on time.
Behavior: We will have an entire grade in the gym. Students will get a general warning, 1 personal invitation to follow directions, and then they will sit out. Students that sit out will not have their minutes count toward their class goal. Students that are a constant behavior issue will be asked to stay in their classroom or with a designated teacher from their team until the issue can be resolved. I will NOT send students back to class until 7:40 so we alleviate roaming in the halls. If students need support staff, please send them: Kindergarten Paras, Special Needs Paras, Peer Partners, 5th Grade Helpers. Example) If your student has a para and you want to send the student, the adult friend needs to come and play as well.
Schedule: Grade 5 Friday 2500 Minutes of Walking per class
We will pass out walking tokens to classes when they reach their minute goal.
Walking outside of the program will not count towards tokens received for the class total.
Thank you for your support,
Abby Balkema

The Still Elementary School Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization formed to enhance opportunities for Still Elementary students. Thanks to financial and volunteer support from parents, staff and community sponsors, the Foundation can supplement enrichment opportunities and increasingly important components of the educational needs of our students for which the schools do not receive funding, and without the same restrictions by which the PTSA must abide. The Foundation board collaborates with parents, staff and administration to identify goals and prioritize spending for each school year and works collaboratively with the PTSA to ensure that funds, activities and efforts do not overlap or are planned in conjunction with each other. Each entity has entirely different goals, but both are vital to the enhancement of the educational opportunities for our students.
This year the Still Foundation is working to fundraise for necessary student laptops that will not only enable online testing but increase the students’ exposure to more technology-based STEAM learning. Additionally, the Foundation is increasing its communications about new developments on campus at Still through its frequent postings on its Facebook page which can be found at the below link. We encourage you to visit the page and click to follow and receive notifications from it.
